St George Illawarra Dragons halfback Benji Marshall will proudly be wearing #PurpleOurWorld socks to raise awareness of pancreatic cancer when he takes to the field against Wests Tigers at ANZ Stadium, Olympic Park on Saturday.
#PurpleOurWorld is an awareness initiative partnered with the Avner Nahmani Pancreatic Cancer Foundation and GI Cancer Institute promoting the understanding of pancreatic cancer.
Both the Dragons and Tigers will be wearing the specially-made purple-and-white socks to help raise awareness of this disease – one that unfortunately Marshall himself has been affected by personally.
“I lost my father six years ago to pancreatic cancer and the harsh reality is its one of the worst forms of cancer because three weeks after he had been diagnosed my father passed away,” said Marshall.
“Unfortunately, you think everything is normal and then life gets taken away.
“We all support a lot of charities along the way as it is something that we are proud to do, but for me, there is nothing more satisfying than giving back to something that’s been taken away from us.
“Helping out with the #PurpleOurWorld cause means a lot to me and I will be proud to roll-up the special socks when it is time to take to the field on Saturday.”
