About Us
OUR HISTORY
The St George Illawarra Dragons were forged behind over a century of combined history and represents two of Rugby League’s richest regions.
The St George Dragons and Illawarra Steelers came together ahead of the 1999 NRL season to form a proud powerhouse.
Rugby League in the St George region dates back well over a century with the club’s first premiership match played on April 23, 1921 – St. George’s Day – against Glebe at the Sydney Sports Ground after years of lobbying for a first-grade team.
The sport blossomed at a similar time in the Illawarra, but locals would have to wait until 1982 before the Steelers made their premiership debut – a February 28 clash against the Panthers at the Wollongong Showground.
Both regions have produced a plethora of legends – Reg Gasnier, Billy Smith, and Brad Mackay are among the names to have hailed from the St George region whilst Graeme Langlands, Craig Young, and Rod Wishart headline the list of stars from the Illawarra.
