The Illawarra Cutters were defeated 42-22 by the Newton Jets at Henson Park, Marrickville on Saturday.
Despite the Cutters sitting higher on the ladder, the Jets impressed with their attacking ability which was shown early when late inclusion Daniel Mortimer found the try line.
Four minutes later, Daniel Mortimer scored again to give Newton an early 8-0 lead.
In the 18th minute, Mortimer was in the thick of the action as his angled run put fullback Jonathan Reuben into a gap as he scored out wide.
Rhyse Martin’s first conversion of the afternoon gave the Jets a 14-0 lead.
Newtown were dominating the contest and continued to exert their dominance in the 23rd minute as forward Willis Meehan barged over.
After the kick-off, the Jets marched down the field and Jonathan Reuben was able to score under the posts.
An easy kick for Martin as the home team extended their lead to 24-0.
Just before half-time, Illawarra were able to score their first try of the game through centre Charly Runciman after an overlap.
Sam Williams converted from the sideline to end the half at 24-6.
In the 45th minute, Daniel Mortimer had a hand in another try as his lead up work led to a try to Rhyse Martin.
Arana Taumata took over the kicking duties and was successful to give Newton a 30-6 lead.
Five minutes later, the Cutters reacted with a try to Geoff Daniela in the corner.
In the 55th minute, Daniela was over again with a big dive in the corner.
Sam Williams’s conversion from the sideline meant the Jets lead 30-16 with 25 minutes to play.
The Cutters gave the Jets a scare after 63 minutes when Kyle Eather chased his own bomb and scored for the away side.
Williams converted again to give the Cutters hope.
This would be the final joy for the Cutters as tries in the last 15 minutes to Willis Meehan and Arana Taumata gave Newton a 42-22 win and the two points.
