The St George Illawarra Dragons and The Disability Trust have partnered to create a new inclusive program for people with disabilities to be a part of the local Illawarra Junior Rugby League competition.
The Score Dragons has been a program of The Disability Trust since 2009 enabling participants to learn the skills associated with the game of rugby league on a weekly basis at North Wollongong PCYC. Up until this year, involvement has been participation at these training sessions only.
Through rounds 8 to 15 the Score Dragons will be playing each Saturday in the Under 13’2 Illawarra South Coast Rugby League competition.
This new opportunity enables the players to transfer their skills into a game setting and play on a weekly basis against their peers in a complete inclusive setting.
“The support of Paul Everill, the Dragons Community program and the local Illawarra Rugby League Junior clubs has been fantastic with all parties getting behind this initiative to ensure the participants from The Disability Trust (Score Dragons) are made to feel welcome and a part of their clubs at their games,” said The Disability Trust Manager Michael Norris.
“It’s great to see the smiles on the faces of our players but also the positive comments from the teams they play against each week who get as much from the experience as we do.”
