St George Illawarra Dragons lock Trent Merrin helped promote the benefits of education when he visited Illawarra Sports High School on Monday.

The Shellharbour Sharks junior was joined by NYC duo Adam Clune and Thomas Freebairn for the visit to his old alumni to discuss with students the importance of balancing education with rugby league as part of the school's talented sports program.

The NSW Blues representative has become an ambassador for the program and explained how it helped him on his career to playing first-grade.

"The program was of immense benefit to me and helped me on my path to carving a career in rugby league," said Merrin.

"It is important for the students here to embrace the benefits of the program as they too will see how rewarding it can be both in the classroom and on the field."
