St George Illawarra Dragons National Youth Competition team winger Matheson Johns reflects on his winning try following the 34-30 golden-point win over the North Queensland Cowboys at Suncorp Stadium, Brisbane on Friday.
The local Thirroul Butchers junior, who re-signed with the Club in recent weeks, clinched the win for his teammates in the third minute of extra time after a blistering group performance which spanned both ends of the field.
The flanker had started the fixture on the interchange bench and admits he was anxious to get game time and play a supporting role on the field.
“It was a very physical and quick game with a lot of men in tackles but it was good fun being out there,” said Johns.
“We were determined near the end to keep them down their end and try to force an error which happened at the death.
“Near the end in the build-up to the try I was determined to try and push-up in support and managed to get the ball.
“I knew that I grounded the ball but had been concerned in case my legs had gone into touch but the video referee determined that had not been the case.”
