St George Illawarra are proud to announce Irene Branigan as the Red V member of the match for Round 11!
As a thank you for her dedication, Irene was showcased during our Round 11 home game at Netstrata Jubilee Stadium, Kogarah on Saturday, May 21 and presented with a signed 2022 Dragons jersey.
Why was she selected as the Red V member of the match?
Irene was nominated for being one of the most passionate Red V members there is and embodies the spirit of the Dragons by never giving up. As shown in her recent success in beating a second bout of cancer while donning her own Red V jersey. Irene displayed her commitment by never missing a moment with the Dragons, also telling her doctor that she wouldn’t miss any more games at Kogarah.
At 71 years of age and a member for 16 consecutive years, Irene still drives to every home game from the Central Coast, taking upwards of three hours to see her Dragons run out. She holds fond memories of being on the hill with her late father and mother and has since passed on the tradition with her son and grandson as fellow Dragons supporters.
Who is Irene’s favourite Dragons player (past or present) and why?
Irene's favourite player of all time is Lord Ted Goodwin. Although I've never seen him play, Irene has always spoke in great detail of how he read the game and played with an excitement that could only be compared to the West Indian cricket team of the 1980's. One of her new favourites who currently represent the Red V is Kezie Apps. Irene watched the reaction she had to Jamie Soward announcing her as captain and Irene couldn't hold back the tears - she loves the way Kezie represents St George Illawarra and never takes a backwards step on the field.
