St George Illawarra Dragons are proud to announce Janice Ridley as the Red V Member of the match for Round 2!
Janice remembers the ‘Never Before, Never Again’ era like it was yesterday.
Janice, a baby at the time, would attend games with her parents at Kogarah who wouldn’t go to a game without her, even taking her along in the pram.
My family had membership at Kogarah since I can remember and we went to many games, I also remember as a child sitting next to Sandy Scott.
Some of you may know Sandy Scott and some of you will google and realise how coincidental one of Australia’s iconic singers was sitting next to one of the most passionate in the Red V in Janice.
Fast forward a couple of years and Janice is close to finishing up at school when the 1977 Grand Final between the Dragons and Eels is about to commence. The Eels were the favourite to claim victory but ended up drawing the first game. Janice went to the thrilling first game and the victorious second game with her close friends (who are also Red V fanatics) and family. They eagerly waited at the gates and as soon as they opened
We would run to get the best seats, as soon as we got them, I would run back and tell my mum where we were.
This was one of her fondest memories as Dragons triumphed over Parramatta scoring 22 unanswered points, so much so that she has watched the replay of this Grand Final recently with her daughter Sherrell.
As Janice began raising her family, she relocated to Queensland and became an interstate flexi member - travelling all over to watch her beloved Dragons. Janice then decided to relocate back home to the Illawarra region and has attended every game – talk about dedication!
She now continues the family tradition, a full circle from attending games as a baby with her family to attending games with her daughter and 3.5-year-old granddaughter – all of whom bleed Red V, through the good times and the bad.
We thank you Janice for your continual dedication and passion for the Dragons and have awarded her the Red V Member of the Match during our Round 2 home game at Jubilee Stadium on Sunday 12th March vs Gold Coast Titans.
