In 1915 Canadian Medical Corps Doctor, Lieutenant-Colonel John McCrae, penned what would go on to become one of the most recognized poems throughout the Commonwealth: In Flanders Fields.
The poem speaks to the anguish and loss involved in wars by both those fighting on the front line and those at home who lost loved ones, fathers, sons, daughters and mothers to the horrors of war. The poem is what inspired the use of a poppy as a symbol of remembrance.
The aim of the Dragons jersey is to honour those fallen, while bringing the words and visuals of McCrae’s poem to prominence. The harrowing imagery of a field of poppies, with the silhouette of a fallen soldier, visually representing the opening line of McCrae’s poem “In Flanders Fields, where poppies blow”.
The Dragons 2023 commemorative jersey showcases a double 'V' which represents the corporal ranking in the Australian and New Zealand Defence Forces (Army, Navy and Air Force) which aligns with the club's famous Red V.
We remember those who have served in wars, conflicts, and peacekeeping missions across the world.
Lest we forget.
