Dragons record strong Jersey Flegg win in Fiji

The Dragons’ mid-year trip to Lautoka’s Churchill Park proved a success with the side taking down the Silktails 38-8 behind a Ben Rumble quartet.

Rumble made it eight tries from just two appearances against the Silktails in 2024 as his impressive run in the No.1 jersey continued.

An error off the opening kick-off put the Dragons on the front foot immediately with Jesse Williams taking in a Rumble tip-on to cross in the left corner and open the visitors’ account.

Buoyed by a yardage penalty, the Silktails hit back soon after through winger Tevita Wanisi who dover over in the right corner to tie proceedings at 4-apiece.

Rumble took off down a short-side moments later to cross and wrestle the lead back the way of the Red V.

Ashton Ward slotted the conversion from inches inside the right touchline to make it a 10-4 Dragons edge.

Rumble made it two in as many sets off another short-side raid after a Cyrus Stanley-Traill break put the visitors back on the attack.

The hosts found a response the next set through second rower Akuila Qoro who scooped up a clearing Dragons kick that he was able to charge down and finished with a swan-dive.

Another kick-off error put the Red V on the attack with Rumble venturing down the left-hand corridor to nab a first-half hat-trick as the lead grew back to a dozen.

Tom Kirk went aerial just shy of the break to reel in a cross-field Ward kick and slam it down as the lead improved to 24-8.

Rumble snagged a fourth early in the second stanza to extend the Dragons’ lead further and continue his strong try-scoring run.

Sevanaia Tovutos was sin binned for a dangerous tackle on his opposite Ben Lavender leaving the hosts down a man mid-way through the second stanza.

Kyan Hjaltason put a chip kick on a dime for a flying Williams who took it on the fly to dive over in the left corner and make it 32-8.

Nick Quinn joined the party soon after scrapping to pick up his own grubber and ground it with Ward’s subsequent conversion making it a 30-point Dragons lead.
