Dragons Lower Grades Wrap: Round 20

Check out our results from the Knock-On Effect NSW Cup, Jersey Flegg Cup & Harvey Norman NSW Women's Premiership competitions from over the weekend.

It proved a perfect weekend for the club's lower grades sides with all four charging their way to decisive wins.

KNOCK-ON EFFECT NSW CUP

Ben Woolf's Dragons pulled off a comprehensive 52-16 victory over the Magpies behind a four-try haul courtesy of Sione Finau at Collegians on Sunday.

It was Finau's third multiple try outing of the season with the 22-year-old having now scored 13 tries from his 14 appearances.

It took just five minutes for the hosts to strike first through fullback Lyhkan King-Togia whose support play was rewarded after the teenager put centre Ben Johnson into space down the right flank off a Viliami Fifita offload before the ball found its way back inside.

Their second came moments later through Fifita who strolled through untouched off a Ryan Couchman tip-on to make it 12-0 early.

The visitors hit back through Josh Feledy five minutes later before Finau, in his first game back from a month-long injury layoff, found his first off a right-side shift with Johnson again summing things up nicely on his inside to lay on the four-pointer.

A Solomon Alaimalo try 24 minutes in kept the Magpies within reach before Savelio Tamale swerved and stepped his way through a ragged defensive line to dive over behind the posts for the Red V and make it 24-10 heading into the break.

Dylan Egan crashed over on the other side of the break to extend the hosts' lead before halves partners Jonah Glover and Fa’amanu Brown combined to lay on another with a bomb off the boot of the former forcing an error that ended up in the arms of the latter.

It became the Finau show soon after with the winger grabbing his second just shy of the hour-mark off a neat scrum play that stripped the Magpies' left edge for numbers and sent him over in the corner of the field.

A Jayden Sullivan try stopped the bleeding momentarily for the visitors before Tamale scooped up a Magpies error to race off 80 metres downfield and hand it off to wing partner Finau for the final 10 as he secured a triple.

Finau found his fourth in the final stages plucking off a Sullivan cut-out ball from inside his own 20 and jetting off as the Red V hit the half-century.

It marked the side's third win on the trot with Woolf's men now sitting just one competition point outside of the Top 5 with the postseason six weeks away.

JERSEY FLEGG CUP

The Dragons knocked off the Wests Tigers 28-22 at Collegians on Sunday behind a Jesse Williams double.

The win proved a major boost for the side's finals chances with the win seeing them leapfrog the Wests Tigers for sixth and move within two points of the Top 5.

The Dragons crossed eight minutes in through Ben Rumble who slipped through the line on a left-side sweep play just a week on from his second four-try haul of the year.

The visitors found an answer through winger Navren Willett before Nick Tsougranis bumped his way through a quartet of Wests Tiger defenders off Ashton Ward to extend the Dragons lead beyond a converted try heading into the break.

The side's lead grew on the other side of half-time with Hamish Stewart pouncing on a deft Ward grubber next to the posts.

Refusing to yield, the visitors came up with their second soon after through back rower Zakauri Clarke.

A piece of Cyrus Stanley-Traill brilliance produced Williams' first try of the encounter moments later with the barnstorming centre attracting multiple defenders before crafting an around-the-corner offload to his winger as the lead ballooned out to 24-10.

The Wests Tigers came roaring back into the contest however with back-to-back tries to Herman Tofaeono and Cayne Nicholas – the second of which coming with Stewart in the bin.

It was a late Williams try that sealed the win for the Red V after Rumble brushed past the defence off an attacking scrum and hit his winger with a one-handed offload.

The teenager still had plenty of work to do however pushing and spinning his way past the cover before going aerial to manufacture a miracle putdown as Aaron Hertsch's men made it three on the trot going into the bye.

HARVEY NORMAN NSW WOMEN'S PREMIERSHIP

The Dragons made it two wins in a row taking down the Bulldogs 20-14 at Belmore on Saturday.

Winger Mia Barber opened the scoring for the visitors just six minutes in before the Bulldogs hit back through Natalia Webb to make it 4-4.

No.9 Bianca Cutrupi and front rower Taimani Kolomaka found back-to-back four-pointers for the Red V to put them up double-digits heading into the half.

Quick tries to Sarai Pule and Shaquaylah Mahakitau-Monschau saw the hosts tie things up entering the final 20 minutes before a 55th-minute try to centre Brittany Constable wrestled the lead back the way of the Dragons.

Constable's effort proved the match-winner with the Dragons holding on for a hard-fought, six-point win.

The Steelers came up with their second dominant win in as many weeks defeating the Eels 42-24 at Collegians on Sunday.

The hosts struck just five minutes in through winger Maria Paseka before Eels prop Tafao Asaua scored in back-to-back sets to put them ahead.

Paseka answered with her second soon after to spark a period of Steelers dominance with the hosts enjoying an eight-minute, three-try stretch heading into half-time to break the contest open.

Second rower Olivia Vale found her way over before No.7 Koffi Brookfield and interchange forward Shae Muhleisen joined her on the scoresheet.

The clash's momentum experienced another sudden turn with the Eels pouring on a trio of second-half tries in the space of 11 minutes.

Aaliyah Haumono crossed 44 minutes in before Asaua grabbed her third soon after.

Debbie Doueihi found her way over with Indie Bostock in the sin bin to cut the deficit back to four entering the final 15 minutes.

A 60th-minute Olivia Vale penalty goal put the hosts back ahead by six before Trinity Tauaneai and Mia Walsh notched late tries to seal a handy Steelers win on home soil.
