The St George Illawarra Dragons are thrilled to announce the return of rugby league icon Samantha Bremner to the club in the pivotal role of Female Football Manager.
Bremner, a trailblazer for women’s rugby league and the club’s inaugural NRLW captain, brings with her a wealth of experience, leadership and a deep network within the game.
As Dragons NRLW player No.1 and a foundational figure in the women's team, Bremner captained the side in its historic first NRLW season in 2018. Her on-field achievements are equally impressive, with nine Test matches for Australia and seven appearances for NSW.
Her return to the Dragons, following her retirement from playing with the Sydney Roosters at the end of this season, marks a significant milestone for the club and the women’s game.
Starting on November 1, Bremner will oversee the club’s women’s football program, taking charge of the overall pathways and coaching structure, working on the development of the next generation of female rugby league stars right through to the shaping of the Dragons’ NRLW roster.
“This appointment highlights the Dragons' unwavering commitment to growing the women’s game,” said Dragons CEO Ryan Webb.
“Sam is not only one of the most respected figures in women’s rugby league, but she’s also a great leader. Her understanding of the game, coupled with her passion for developing female talent, makes her the ideal person to drive our program forward as the women’s game continues to rise in prominence.”
Dragons General Manager of Football, Ben Haran, echoed the sentiment, praising Bremner’s return to the Red V.
"It’s exciting to welcome Sam back to the club where she first made her mark as a player," Haran said.
"Her influence on and off the field is undeniable and in this newly created role she will lead the charge in shaping the future of women’s rugby league at the Dragons.”
Bremner said she was relishing the opportunity to return to the club in a key role.
"I am really excited to return home once my playing commitments finish at the end of this season," Bremner said.
"St George Illawarra Dragons is where my NRLW journey began, so it’s nice to have things come full circle.
"The future of the women’s program at the Dragons from pathways right through to NRLW is very bright…I can’t wait to be a part of it."
Bremner’s appointment is a testament to the rapid growth and increasing importance of the women’s game in rugby league. Her leadership, experience and insight will be crucial as the Dragons aim to strengthen their pathways and establish themselves as a powerhouse in women’s rugby league for years to come.
